The data: Insights from global logistics leaders

In this report, produced in partnership with Adrian Gonzalez, transportation industry thought leader and host of the renowned Talking Logistics podcast, we’ll explore the impact that AI is having now. We’ll examine the motivations for businesses to adopt AI, the hesitations of those who haven’t, and how it will enhance the critical, human work that moves the global supply chain.

Transportation management systems (TMS), a core component of global logistics operations, are evolving alongside and because of AI. Most leading providers are adding AI capabilities to their solutions, including agentic AI.

To understand what’s real versus hype, we surveyed executives responsible for global operations at 230+ shipper, carrier and logistics service provider (LSP) companies in the United States and Europe, and conducted in-person interviews with several leading executives. We asked them how they use AI today, the obstacles they face, where they see the biggest opportunities, and how they expect to interact with an AI-enabled TMS going forward. The pages that follow offer a snapshot of where the industry’s at on the AI adoption journey and where we may be headed next.

“A planner or dispatcher who's firefighting today... will become, within a few years, an AI boss over four or five agents who are firefighting on their behalf.”

"AI is going to change every job"

As AI reshapes business, and society at large, how leaders respond in the next few years will determine their trajectory.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently said, “generative AI is the most transformative technology since the Internet.” And Walmart CEO Doug McMillon remarked, “It’s very clear AI is going to change literally every job” as the company deploys AI agents and uses AI tools to track supply chain and product trends.

How will AI transform existing supply chain roles?

The full scope remains to be seen. But one thing’s for certain: every supply chain professional will need to learn how to work with AI rather than against it.

AI itself isn’t new. Rule-based logic, basic machine learning, pattern recognition and deterministic optimization have supported supply chain decisions for decades with limited workforce disruption. But what’s fresh is the expansion of AI into distinct capabilities—such as generative AI, agentic AI and sequential decision-making—which are reshaping core processes.
